The Advising Day

Today was one of Elmhurst Colleges many advising days that they hold during the summer. The day was pretty well planned out and easy to undertake.

The day started with check in and an introduction from the Dean of Academics and was followed by our placement tests. Let me tell you that the math portion was not very easy for myself, but for those who are good at math, it should be a cinch. Next, I took the foreign language test, it would be easy for those who know the language, not so much myself. I had not taken a language class since 2003, and I have not used said language but since I had a year under my belt, I had to take the test.

Next came the process known as getting my email and other account information. This was a real simple procedure and took no longer than 20 minutes. Then I was off to Meet the Centers.

Here we learn about the Center for Professional Excellence, Niebuhr (Knee brrr) Center, Center for Health Professions, and Learning Center. Each one had it's own place on the Elmhurst Campus and we were told to utilize each of these things if we so choose.

Next came the Campus Security Presentation. This was a very interesting presentation, considering that I thought it was going to be very boring, and just cover the things that we absolutely had to know. I was surprised at how engaging the woman was in getting us the facts and how delightful she made the presentation.

Next we had lunch and after that we were off to Advising! Advising was quick and I was able to take the classes that I wanted. I was also given a book that I am required read by the start of school... The book is called "Where Am I Wearing" by Kelsey Timmerman. I hope the book is as interesting as it's title. I may keep a chapter by chapter review as I read.

After this I went to get my mail box, which was not easy to get into at all! I actually had to have someone help me get the thing open!

Then it was time to check out, well, for me.

The Point Is...

In the light of the world these days, going to college is almost a mandatory phase in our lives. Yet, it is so expensive for one to actually attend the school of their choice. Yes, community college is a great alternative, but most of us are finding that in order to get by in life we need to attend a four year College. This is difficult for some if they do not have the grades or if they do not hold a traditional high school diploma.

I for one am a GED holder, and HAVE been accepted into a top rate college with out having to attend community college. I applied to four schools, one of which having lax admission policy. I was denied three of the four, that included the lax admission school. I was accepted to my first choice, the hardest of the four to get into, and not to mention ranked in the top 20 of Mid Western Colleges.

I shall, for the next four years, document my adventure through Elmhurst College. I hope to share the opinions of fellow classmates and of course have photos' available to you!
